Neutrality. The word appeals to our innate sense of fairness, but what does it really mean, where—and in whom—does it reside, and what happens in the absence of neutrality? How can we fight bias in new media like smart phones and the Internet? How can we move toward a carbon-neutral society?
Join keynote speaker Hans-Ulrich Jost, a historian on Swiss neutrality, along with experts from business, politics, art, and new media as they seek to answer these questions through entertaining short presentations, co-sponsored by swissnex San Francisco and the Berkeley Center for New Media. A reception follows the day’s events.
Hans-Ulrich Jost's Bio
| Born in 1940, Jost is honorary professor of contemporary history at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, and Chairman of the National Commission for publishing Swiss Diplomatic Documents (DDS). Author of numerous articles, he has published books on socialism, the emergence of the extreme right (The Reactionary Vanguard), and on his country’s history from 1938 to 1948 (Wages of Neutrality). Jost founded the series, History and Contemporary Society in 1986 and launched the magazine, The Annuals in 1990. |
