Just how does an android move? Award-winning Swiss dancer and choreographer Jasmine Morand tackles this question in Marvin, one of three works presented by her dance company, Prototype Status, at this year’s San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) with the support of swissnex San Francisco.

Morand and her dancers will perform three pieces at the Southside Theater at Fort Mason: Marvin (2004), Frozen (2007), and Caso & Caos (2009). All three make their US premiere during an evening presentation at Fort Mason on Friday, May 28, with a pre-performance reception open to all ticket holders hosted by swissnex San Francisco and the Consulate General of Switzerland in San Francisco.

Marvin will be repeated as part of a split bill on Saturday, May 29 (with Keith Hennessy) and on Sunday, May 30 (with Christian Burns and Anthony Discenza).

Marvin

Marvin is a 35-minute solo performance choreographed by Prototype Status’ artistic director, Jasmine Morand, and performed by David N. Russo. Marvin chronicles the first moments of life for a being of artificial intelligence. The score by electronic composer Pablo Reche, is mixed live onstage by Berkeley-based Enrique Gonzalez Müller.

Frozen

Frozen is performed by Jasmine Morand and inspired by the loss of a loved one. It examines the final moments of human life and depicts a body torn between rebellion and deliverance.

Caso & Caos

Happiness, content, and inner peace are all marketed as essential attributes of a successful life. Caso & Caos, a solo for dancer and vacuum cleaner performed by Elina Müller Meyer, takes a critical look at the unspoken criteria defining well-being by showing a body that toughens up, endures the rules, and holds out waiting for impending release.

Bio

Jasmine Morand

Jasmine Morand is the choreographer and artistic director of the dance company, Prototype Status, which she founded in Vevey, Switzerland, in 2003. In 2004, she won first prize for her production of Marvin from the Swiss Society of Authors (SSA). In the same year, she was selected for the SIWIC, international master class for young choreographers in Zurich. In 2008, her dance work Aquarium was supported by the new project, Dramaturgy for Dance by the SSA. She has since presented her works in Germany, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, and Denmark. She also performs in the Butoh Ensemble of Minako Seki in Berlin.

Morand trained at the Ballet School of Genevieve Chaussat in Geneva and passed her exams at the Academy Princess Grace of Monaco. Between 1996 and 2000, she worked at the National Ballet of Nancy and Lorraine, at the Opera of Zurich, and at the National Opera of Ljubljana. In 2000, she received a two-year grant from the Pierino Ambrosoli Foundation to the Rotterdam Modern Dance Academy and started developing her own choreographic work.
