One Planet Budgeting: Making Sustainability Real with the Ecological Footprint
Are we running out of planet? Was Thomas Malthus wrong? Do economies self-correct or self-destruct when they operate as if resources were limitless? The Ecological Footprint explores these questions, and provides the tools to answer them. Global Footprint Network Executive Director Mathis Wackernagel will showcase applications from around the world, showing how government agencies, NGOs, businesses, and cities are making use of this tool to address issues of sustainability. Wackernagel will discuss the way, just as financial accounting tracks economic health, measures like the Footprint can help us manage our ecological balance sheet and develop policies that protect rather than deplete our natural capital.
Making Sustainability Real in a Business Environment
Your business recycles, has switched to renewable energy and compact fluorescents--now what? How do businesses incorporate sustainability practices that engage their employees, customers, clients, and stakeholders in a meaningful and proactive way? Several case studies of businesses that have used ClimatePartner's processes will be examined to show that sound sustainability practices are not only good for the planet, but good for business, too.

| Mathis Wackernagel, Ph.D., Founder and Executive Director of Global Footprint Network. Global Footprint Network is a charitable research organization with headquarters in California. This organization supports the creation of a sustainable economy by advancing the policy-utility of the Ecological Footprint. The goal is to make ecological limits central to decision-making everywhere. Mathis has worked on sustainability issues and lectured at more than 100 universities on all continents (minus Antarctica). Mathis created with Professor William Rees the “Ecological Footprint” concept, now a widely used sustainability measure. Mathis is also an adjunct faculty at SAGE of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mathis’s awards include an honorary doctorate from the University of Berne, a 2007 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, a 2006 WWF Award for Conservation Merit, and the 2005 Herman Daly Award of US Society for Ecological Economics. | Anne Vick, Managing Director of ClimatePartner California. ClimatePartner is a German-based consultancy with offices throughout Europe. ClimatePartner works with companies and large events to help them reduce their carbon emissions within existing business models. Unavoidable emissions can then be compensated through innovative and educational offset programs. Anne holds a Masters in Polar Studies from the University of Cambridge and has spent over 6 years working at research stations in the Arctic and Antarctic. She is a volunteer presenter for Al Gore and The Climate Project and has been involved in environmental and climate issues for over 12 years. |
