Program: To celebrate the week de la Francophonie in the Bay Area, meet Dr. Anne de Lovinfosse, clinical psychologist, and Jacques Gauchey, media professional, to hear and discuss, in English, the richness and challenges of cross-cultural differences. Borders are disappearing, we are becoming more interdependent, the pace of change is increasing, anxiety is on the rise. Most people latch consciously and often subconsciously on their cultural differences as a refuge. The result often consists of misunderstandings, perceiving others as a threat rather than developing a sense of curiosity. Dr. de Lovinfosse, clinical psychologist, will address and invite a discussion on this universal question in the specific context of Francophone-American cultural differences. What does it mean to think cross-culturally? Addressing obstacles and solutions to cross-cultural issues with Emotional Intelligence. From Alexis de Tocqueville to Jacques Chirac, both the United States and Europe have drifted back and forth along the great divide of Western culture, enriching each other and, sometimes, contradicting each other. Jacques Gauchey, media professional, will emphasize the historical roots of the cultural differences and clair-obscurs between America and Old Europe and give his perspective, on a lighter side, on some iconic and symbolic cultural gaps. Originally from Belgium, she earned her first degree at the University of Louvain in 1973. In the US since 1979, she furthered her training and acquired the additional licenses to practice in California. She incorporates in her traditional training the latest psychological approaches and technologies evolved in the American System. Aside from specialties in trauma, substance abuse and anxiety-depression, she has been a lecturer on Cross-cultural differences for the formation of psychologist and family counselors. A significant part of her practice (www.delovinfosse-anne.com) helps expatriates and cross-cultural couple to understand and transcend cultural misunderstandings so that a fruitful dialogue is possible. Jacques Gauchey is a writer and an entrepreneur. He is the author of La "Vallee du Risque, Silicon Valley," a book on the spirit of enterprise in the IT industry. He has led many European executives trips to California as an international business development consultant. He runs an import-export business between France and the United States. He moved to San Francisco in 1978 as the West Coast correspondent for Le Point magazine (Paris). |
