One of the primary limitations in environmental research today is the lack of spatial and temporal environmental observations. The high cost of conventional sensing instruments makes it difficult for scientists to deploy a large number of sensing units. The Swiss Experiment (SwissEx) was therefore initiated to foster the creation of new wireless communication technologies, simpler and less expensive sensors and, above all, the possibility to capture, transmit, save and automatically process huge amounts of data in real-time. The goal of the SwissEx is to enhance our understanding of what environmental change means for society from local to regional scales and identify key mechanisms involved in natural hazards. Specific and unique strengths of the project are a truly interdisciplinary collaboration, the willingness to understand environmental processes as a whole, the massive amount of in situ observations, the use of new generation wireless sensing devices (SensorScope), the integration of heterogeneous data and the involvement of the community in an innovative way.
The Swiss Experiment is a multidisciplinary consortium of Swiss research institutions (ETHZ, EPFL, WSl/SLF, MICS and EAWAG) and is supported by CCES, SNF and Microsoft Research.
