To get a taste of the February 12, 2010, discussion on science centers, here's a little experiment from Switzerland's Technorama:
The pattern below consists of black squares on a white background. Fix your eye on a particular intersection and notice how the surrounding white spaces appear darker. Find out about the so-called lateral inhibition that creates the effect and try other experiments here.
