This Intensive Course will teach managers how to understand and apply LCA information toward achieving key corporate goals.
Participants are asked to identify in advance one or several key problems or challenges they think LCA can help them to address. Throughout the session, they will be asked to think and discuss how the session on content bears on their issues, including changes to interact on these topics with their peers and with the instructors. Each participant will leave the session having an understanding of the prospects and path forward to use LCA in addressing each issue.

Jon Dettling is the US Director for Quantis where he provides a decade’s worth of professional experience in leading applications of life cycle assessment, chemical management, and environmental impact assessment within leading public and private sector groups. Mr. Dettling has been a member of the World Resource Institute’s Greenhouse Gas Protocol working group, the Sustainability Consortium’s measurement sciences working group, IEEE’s green engineering editorial board, and the technical committee of the American Center for Life Cycle Assessment. He was also on the Steering Team for the Global CEO Forum’s Project on Packaging and a reviewer for the International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment. He has worked with a diverse range of leaders in public and private enterprises, including the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Environmental Defense Fund, Pfizer, Steelcase, CalRecycle, Kraft Foods, and Hewlett Packard. He holds a Master’s degree from the University of Michigan in Environmental Health Sciences.
Deborah Martin has over fifteen years of professional experience providing leadership in sustainability and risk management in various industries including biotech/pharma, electronics, and semi-conductor manufacturing. In her current role at Pacific Biosciences, she is responsible for the integration of compliance and sustainable development strategies into global business practices. Prior to joining Pacific Biosciences, she was the EHS and Sustainability Manager at Genencor where she worked on sustainability metrics consolidation, life cycle assessments and carbon footprint analysis of bio-based products. Deborah is also actively involved in the American Industrial Hygiene Association where she served as Chair of the Stewardship and Sustainability Committee working to drive sustainability into the focus and professional learning programs. In addition, she serves as a scientific advisor for the California Industrial Hygiene Council (CIHC) providing comments to the Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC) ground breaking regulation on Safer Consumer Product Regulation. This regulation serves to integrate green chemistry principles and life cycle assessment practices toward the development of safer alternatives in consumer products. Deborah graduated from the University of Calgary in 1993 where she earned a B.S. in Microbiology and Oregon State in 1996 where she earned a M.S. in Public Health.
