Open MAKE is a monthly program highlighting the tools, techniques, and ingenuity of local and international Makers and is organized by the Exploratorium, MAKE Magazine, and Pixar Animation Studios. Pe Lang is a Swiss sound and media artist currently participating in an artist residence at the Exploratorium, where he is developing a piece for the museum’s collection. On Saturday, April 21, he gives a presentation during Open MAKE—the theme is trash—focused on how to build kinetic sound devices with simple materials. Pe Lang’s work includes sound installations, live performances, and compositions based on elegant and minimal kinetic systems combined with devices he creates to use as sources of sound. He prefers to experiment and build his artworks with inexpensive motors, small magnets, and the raw materials of bare wire, plastic tubing, metal plate, and ball bearings, to allow viewers and listeners to appreciate the delicate and unpredictable movements. At the Exploratorium, he will show some of the simple materials and construction methods he uses, including industrial surplus magnets, simple parts, and fasteners. Bio
